ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)- West Irondequoit and Brockport are among the school districts nationwide affected by a data breach at an education company.

In a press release from Friday, the district said that they had been notified by the vendor Pearson Clinical Assessment that a recent data security "included some current and former West Irondequoit staff and current and former students."

In their own statement dating from Thursday, Pearson said about 13,000 AIMSweb 1.0 accounts connected to schools and universities had been affected worldwide.

Although Pearson's statement says that exposed data could include data such as birthdays, West Irondequoit's release says their data exposed in the breach was only information already available to the public: names, job titles and email addresses for staff and only names for current and former students. They add that everyone affected has been notified.

The Brockport Central School District also was affected by the breach which included student names and their date of birth, as well as staff names and some school-issued email addresses. They have released a statement that can be found below:

"The Brockport Central School District was recently informed of a third party data breach involving the unauthorized access of student and staff data through an agency the district utilizes for student assessment.

The data was limited to select student names and date of birth and select staff names and school issued email addresses. There is no evidence this information has been misused.

BCSD is committed to protecting and securing our educational data.  Our systems have many controls in place to ensure security and privacy. Those affected were notified and steps have been taken to mitigate the incident and protect against similar events."

While West Irondequoit and Brockport are the only local districts confirmed to have been affected by the breach thus far, several other districts list Pearson or AIMSweb on their websites that can be found by using their sites' search function. News10NBC has begun to reach out to those districts for any comment.
