Perhaps Congresswoman Louise Slaughter's first possible challenger in the 2018 midterm election has emerged: Dr. James "Jim" Maxwell, a local neurosurgeon.

Maxwell announced his candidacy for the Republican Nomination on Saturday at the City Grille in Rochester. According to his website, the McQuaid graduate and East Rochester resident has been the Chief of Neurosurgery at Rochester General Hospital since 1998. He has been a brain surgeon in Rochester since 1982.

In a letter sent to media, Maxwell writes that "It doesn't take a brain surgeon to know Congress is broken - but it just might take one to fix it."

If nominated, Maxwell would likely take on Congresswoman Louise Slaughter in November's midterm election. Slaughter, a Democrat, has represented the area since 1986, defeating Republican challengers in 16 straight elections. Her most recent victories, in 2014 and 2016, came against Gates Town Supervisor Mark Assini.

Reached for comment, Assini said he welcomed another Republican voice to discuss issues facing the community, but added that he would confirm his intentions for the year's race later this month.
