ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- With the temperature holding steady at 23 degrees, a hearty band of swimmers embraced the icy waters of Lake Ontario at Charlotte Beach on Sunday as a part of the annual Polar Plunge fundraiser.

The Polar Plunge is a premier fundraiser for Special Olympics New York, drawing nearly 2,000 plungers and raising $250,000 last year.

"The more funds we raise, the more we can expand our programs, giving our athletes more opportunities to train and compete," Stacey Hengstman, president and CEO of Special Olympics New York said.

Perhaps this event is a lake effect that all can appreciate.
