BRIGHTON, N.Y. (WHEC) –  A movement is underway in Rochester to lift others up. The Positivity Initiative, launched by a local business owner, is connecting the city to local artists.

As a hair stylist and owner of Mint Salon, Jordan Betts often has clients share moments of success and struggles while in her salon chair. After a particularly hard day herself, she learned the power that a small act of kindness can carry.

“After a rough day of being beaten down, by what seems like my entire city, I received a postcard hanging from my front door from a beloved friend that said, ‘You are amazing, nothing is going to get in your way... You got this!’” shared Betts.

She added, “What can one simple act of kindness do? For me, it helped me out of a very sad slump and helped me continue on my path. For others, it may help them see beauty in themselves, ability to get that new job, a friend they can lean on, or even save a life.”

So, she began the Positivity Initiative to bring that power to others in her city.

The idea is you will be able to get a beautiful postcard featuring work from a local artist to send words of encouragement to a friend.

“What we’re forgetting is the connection between humans," expressed Betts. "To receive something tangible, that you can hold on to, it means more than just a text ‘hey I’m thinking about you.’ To receive something in the mail with words of affirmation, a beautiful piece of art, it allows us to connect on a different human level."

Betts explained there are three ways to get involved:

Art Sponsor:
As an artist, you will be donating your art to be printed on a postcard with words of encouragement. The postcards will be printed in sub-batches associated with the business sponsors.

Business Sponsor:
As a business, you will put $250 towards printing the postcards as well as postage. Your logo will be printed on the postcards in the batch your money funded as a sponsor of the initiative. Each batch is 1000 cards.

Community Sponsor:
Once the postcards are printed they will be stamped and handed out to all the sponsors to hand out at their place of business, favorite places to shop, etc. Then they will be distributed to other businesses wanting to hand them out to their patrons! You will coach your staff to understand what this project is and offer them to people who patron your business.

You can get involved by emailing Mint Salon at Staff@GetMinty.com.
