Major East Avenue makeover won't happen until after Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -- The main route to the Senior PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club is East Avenue.

The New York State Department of Transportation has been planning a major spring renovation of East Avenue in Brighton and Pittsford, so News10NBC wanted to know when that work is going to get done.

News10NBC first exposed the terrible condition of East Avenue in Brighton and Pittsford last year. We showed you the repairs the state made and how it reduced the road from four driving lanes down to two between the 490/590 interchange and St. John Fisher College.

On Tuesday, we learned that the major rebuild of East Avenue will start after the golf tournament.

We drove the road Tuesday from Brighton to Pittsford as if we were going to Oak Hill. The road is a lot better than it was last year and the NYS DOT repainted the lines on the road last week.

The road is due for a total overhaul, ripping up all the asphalt and building a new surface.

Jordan Guerrein, Public Information Office NYS DOT: "So we want to make sure we don't have a work zone established. We don't want to be getting in the way of that event. And we also don't want to start a project and leave it unattended or leave it half finished or in progress while we have all these people coming in and out of that area as well."

Bryan Karns, championship director, 2019 Sen. PGA Championship: "I know some of the work got done. I think some of it got postponed because the one thing we don't want is construction. We want people that are coming, especially coming from outside the community, that their experience from the time they park their car to the time they get to the golf course is a good one."

The work on East Avenue will start the week or two weeks after the Senior PGA Championship. That's after Memorial Day weekend into the start of June.

The NYS DOT says it'll be a "brand new road" when it's done.
