Man arrested after elderly woman dies in Corning fire

CORNING, N.Y. (WHEC) — State police have arrested a man in connection with a deadly fire that claimed the life of an 82-year-old woman in Steuben County.

Justin Gause, 21, is charged with second-degree manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and unlawful manufacturing of methamphetamine after crews responded to a home on Townsend Avenue in Corning Tuesday.

Investigators say the victim, whose name has not yet been released, died from injuries she sustained while trapped inside. 

Several items involved in the production of meth were found inside the home, according to state police. 

Gause is being held in Steuben County Jail and awaiting arraignment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
