LYONS, N.Y. (WHEC) — Alberto Reyes was sentenced on Thursday to 20 years behind bars for the death of his girlfriend and her 14-month-old son.
The sentence was handed down after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges last September for the deaths of Selena Hidalgo-Calderon and her 14-month-old son, Owen.
The two had disappeared from a farm off Joy Road in Sodus in May 2018. Selena's body was found a week later in some nearby woods, while Owens' remains were found at the same farm in October 2018.
Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts had strong words about today’s sentencing.
"Mr. Reyes will be released from prison some time,” Virts said. “He'll be almost 50 years old. He'll still have five years of parole supervision, however, Selena and Owen, they no longer have a life. They're in heaven. So as the judge said any sentencing, any justice here is probably inadequate.”
Reyes will serve two concurrent 20-year sentences, and he also pleaded guilty to federal charges for re-entering the United States illegally after being deported years ago, and using fake documents to do so.
Prosecutors say he must serve his time first before he's deported again.
