FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WHEC) — There's a major project that, at least for the next year and change, will dramatically affect day to day life in the Village of Fairport. The iconic Main Street lift bridge in Fairport is closing for repairs on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The work is part of a $16 million project to revamp the 105-year-old bridge along with others across the Erie Canal. Village leaders, first responders, and the New York State Department of Transportation have done what they can to get everyone ready.

Mayor Julie Domaratz says "Fairport on the Rise" is the motto for the work getting underway. The lift bridge is not expected to reopen until November 2020.

Neighbors can text FPTbridge to 888-777 for alerts.

The Parker Street Bridge will serve as the alternative route for pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
