ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Huge crowds gathered in downtown Rochester Friday as the community said goodbye to a fallen Rochester police officer.
The memorial service for Officer Manny Ortiz started at 11 a.m. at the Convention Center.
The 52-year-old officer was on his way to work last Saturday night when he accidentally shot himself in the thigh with his personal gun. The bullet hit a major artery. Sheriff Todd Baxter said Ortiz was trying to get to the hospital when he drove off Empire Boulevard in Penfield and crashed into a ravine.
Ortiz's close friends described him as an icon in the community. Organizers are planning for at least 2,000 people at the memorial — a testament to what Ortiz meant to the City of Rochester.
