Deputy credited for spotting Mendon fire and saving family

MENDON, N.Y. (WHEC) -- A Monroe County Sheriff's deputy was being praised for his actions after spotting an early morning fire.

The deputy was on patrol and spotted a fire in Mendon at 1 a.m. Friday before it got out of control.

A chicken coop caught fire and spread to the garage on Clover Street.

Several fire departments responded to the scene, including firefighters from Honeoye Falls, Mendon, Rush and Henrietta.

Seven people from the home were evacuated as a precaution.

No one was hurt.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
