In a news conference Thursday evening, Chief Michael Ciminelli says police were first alerted to the situation by a 911 call around 12:50 a.m. for a man suffering a mental health crisis. Police say the man's father made the call.

But, when officers arrived on scene, the man had already left the house. Officers searched the area and around 1:50 a.m. they heard a man screaming on the south side of the church.

When officers found the man, they say he was covered with blood and tried to run away when they attempted to help him.

Officers, with help from ambulance workers and the man's father, were able to restrain the man and get him to the hospital where he later died.

Chief Ciminelli says, "Based on our investigation at this time, it appears the subject forcibly entered the church by breaking a window with a rock, and crawling over jagged glass, sustaining severe lacerations to his upper body. There was an extensive amount of blood throughout the inside of the church."

Police say they don't believe the man was breaking into the church to commit a crime like theft.

"Why he chose to go into the church, I cannot answer," Chief Ciminelli says. "There's certainly no reason for anyone in that neighborhood to be in fear of anything because of this incident. It's just a very sad, tragic incident."
