ITHACA, N.Y. (WHEC) -- This has happened to all of us at one point. You travel and arrive at your destination but your bags don't show up.
The story of a man from Rochester, who had this happen to him over Easter, is so bizarre it caught the attention of the News10NBC investigative team.
And it took another bizarre twist Monday.
For Easter, Mark Payton took a Greyhound bus to Ithaca to visit family. When he arrived, he was given the wrong luggage.
"At that time, I was mildly laughing and upset," Payton said.
The laughing would soon stop.
Payton says he put the wrong luggage on the next bus to Scranton, Pennsylvania, where the rightful owner was staying.
Payton then contacted Greyhound and filed a missing baggage claim. The date on the claim is April 19, which is Good Friday.
The claim lists all his clothes and the $1,000 CPAP machine he needs to sleep.
A week later, he got an email from Greyhound saying they found his bag in New York City. Consistent with company policy, the email promised the bag would be "forwarded to the location you have requested."
"It's not lost. They have it. They know where it is," he said. "It's a matter of walking it out of the baggage office over to a bus coming to Rochester and unloading it here."
That email came three weeks ago. Payton still doesn't have his luggage.
So on Friday, News10NBC contacted Greyhound. We wanted to know what's taking so long to return Payton's luggage.
The media specialist told us she was "checking into this now."
And then on Monday, in a phone call with Payton, came the twist.
News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean: "Where is your luggage right now exactly?"
Mark Payton, missing luggage: "It is at the Greyhound station in Dallas, Texas."
Brean: "What is it doing in Dallas?"
Payton: "According to the baggage claim department that I talked to yesterday, after a certain amount of time sitting at the baggage claim office in New York City they had to send it off to the next closest full-service Greyhound station which turned out to be Dallas, Texas."
The Rochester station is shared between Greyhound and New York Trailways.
The federal Department of Transportation says you have a less than one percent chance of losing luggage when you fly. There's no readily available data for buses.
The maxumum an airline can pay for a lost bag is $1,131.00.
The maximum for a bus company is $250.
Based on Payton's claim, that's a fraction of the cost of his CPAP machine.
"I want my luggage. I need that CPAP," he said. "That's all I'm asking."
We contacted Greyhound again.
News10NBC just heard from Greyhound at 6 p.m. on Monday.
The company says it's making arrangements to get Payton's luggage to Rochester.
We asked why it was sent to Dallas. Greyhound doesn't have an answer yet.
We checked the Greyhound schedule online. If it was still in New York City, Greyhound could put Payton's luggage on a bus Tuesday morning and it would arrive in Rochester by 11:50 a.m.
