ROCHESTER N.Y. (WHEC) — Multiple people are displaced after a large house fire on Columbia Avenue that took place early Saturday morning.

The Rochester Fire Department responded to a house fire on 435/437 Columbia Avenue around 4:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, fire crews noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the attic. When firefighters entered the home, they found fire on the first, second and attic level of the home.

Firefighters say the bulk of the fire was in the attic and crews had to be careful of holes in the floor to extinguish the fire.

Due to the extensive amount of overhaul, fire crews remained on scene for a while.

One of the occupants of the home stated that he heard the smoke detector going off and woke up others in the house. All occupants made it out safely, according to RFD Deputy Chief James McGowan.

The Red Cross was on scene and is helping multiple occupants find temporary housing.

Fire officials believe the cause of the fire was an electrical problem in the home.
