ONTARIO COUNTY (WHEC) -- Narcan is saving lives.
The number of overdose-related deaths dropped by 50 percent in Ontario County when compared to this time last year and according to the county's health department, Narcan may be the reason.
Narcan, or naloxone, is a drug that reverses overdoses from opioids such as heroin and fentanyl. The health department says the drug, combined with effective emergency care, increases a person's chance of survival from an overdose.
Narcan can be obtained without a prescription at a discounted rate at local pharmacies through the Naloxone Co-Payment Assistance Program. It can also be obtained by attending a local training.
