ROCHESTER, N.Y (WHEC)— The New York National Guard plans to hold a memorial ceremony to honor the three soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in Mendon in January.

National Guard spokesman Col. Richard Goldenberg told News10NBC the closed-to the public ceremony is planned for Friday, Feb. 26 at the Rochester National Guard headquarters on Patriot Way, near the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport.

Chief Warrant Officers Christian KochSteven Skoda, and Daniel Prial were all killed when their helicopter crashed during a routine training exercise on Jan. 20. All three were honored with funeral services near their hometowns in the following week.

Goldenberg said the guard had originally spoken to Pegula Sports and Entertainment, which owns the Blue Cross Arena, about holding the ceremony there, but ultimately it was decided that the best place to have it is "somewhere you already have the keys to."

Goldenberg said the proposed BCA ceremony was never supposed to be for the public, either.

News10NBC has reached out to Monroe County, and Pegula Sports and Entertainment for comment, we are waiting to hear back.
