NEW YORK (WHEC) -- New York state will launch new identification cards for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The cards are designed to help police, firefighters, and paramedics better understand and interact with people with developmental disabilities who may not be able to communicate.

The front of the card states, "I have a developmental disability. I have difficulty understanding and following your directions or may become unable to respond. I may become physically agitated if you prompt me verbally or touch me or more too close to me. I am not intentionally refusing to cooperate. I may need your assistance."

On the back on the cards, there is information about the ID holder.

You can request a card through the state.
