The New York State Association of Chiefs of Police issued a statement on Friday voicing their opposition to legislation that would legalize marijuana in New York.
According to the statement, "as Police Officers, we are sworn to enforce Federal, State and Municipal laws and to protect the public. Marijuana is illegal under Federal law and is classified as a “Schedule 1” drug which means that the federal government views cannabis as highly addictive with no medical value."
The association says that aside from health related issues they are concerned with how legalization will impact traffic safety.
Plans are being drafted to make recreational marijuana legal here in New York state, and a model for the rules and regulations surrounding it is becoming clearer.
Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have approved some form of legalization and in November, Michigan became the 10th state to approve recreational use.
