ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Some lawmakers are pushing New York state to ban Styrofoam containers.

Tuesday night, the Rensselaer County Legislature near Albany unanimously passed a resolution urging the state to eliminate Styrofoam waste from landfills.

Originally, the resolution called for all Styrofoam to be banned. However, one lawmaker claimed it was too broad and an amendment was made.

“When you talk about the global issues of pollution, Styrofoam hits all the nails on the head,” Minority Leader Peter Grimm said. “It’s a health concern, it’s also a landfill concern, and it’s also a production concern.”

When it comes to health concerns, county leaders say containers release cancer-causing chemicals when they are heated.

New York City already has a ban on these products — a change that took effect this year.
