We all know most of the sweet treats we love to splurge on aren't so good for us or our waistline.
That's why many Americans reach for diet soda instead of the higher-calorie, sugar-packed regular soda.
But take a look at this claim from the website Skinny and Healthy.
The website says, "Drinking one diet drink daily can triple risk of dementia and stroke."
That's a pretty scary claim. The article goes on to say: "Remember that we are what we eat. Sugary drinks are bad, but diet drinks can even be more dangerous! The results showed that adults who had one or more diet drinks a day were 2.9 times more likely to develop dementia and three times more at risk of strokes compared to those who virtually had none at all."
The article concludes by stating: "Now, you have proof that drinking one diet drink a day can triple risk of dementia and strokes."
But is that really true?
The author cites this study was done by Boston University researchers and published in the journal Stroke.
However, that study never stated that diet drinks are more dangerous than regular sodas.
While that one study did show an increased risk for people who drink diet soda, the study's author clearly stated that "future research is needed to replicate our findings," making this claim unproven.
