ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — We like to feature the best and brightest athletes in Rochester and many of them happen to be exceptional leaders. As this week's Scholar-Athlete shows us, a key factor in being a leader is lifting up your teammates.
"I really try my best to be a good person in the world," Jania Pedraza said.
The world could use more people like Jania Pedraza. The senior at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School in Rochester likes to lead by example on and off the court.
"We still, I don't know, feels like family in a way," Jania said.
She's a 2-sport athlete, playing softball and the spring and volleyball in the fall. A captain on the volleyball team, she's versatile, usually the libero, but also played setter and outside hitter. She says playing sports has taught her lessons that will stay with her forever.
"It gives me so much confidence, especially when I play with the team,” Jania said, “we always hype each other up, working together, always positive."
A member of the honor roll every year since 9th grade, Jania plans to study physical therapy next year in college, to once again, help people.
Congratulations Jania Pedraza, the News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week!
