NY AG issues warning over gas price gouging

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— If you think your local gas station is jacking up prices, New York Attorney General Letitia James wants to know.

The AG Thursday said she’s urging New Yorkers to report any "dramatic" increases in the cost of gas.

The warning comes after the nation’s largest fuel pipeline was shut down by a gang of hackers. While operations have since restarted, James cited a spike in reports of panic buying of gasoline down the East Coast as well as a rise in prices by some sellers.

As for what to look out for when you report a problem, James said you should mention specific increased prices, the dates and places you saw the increased prices, and the types of fuel being sold.

She said you should also provide copies of sales receipts and photos of the advertised prices, if available. Gas stations that appear to have engaged in price gouging must have evidence to justify their price increases.
