ALBANY, N.Y. (WHEC)—New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Wednesday she filed a lawsuit against Amazon over what her office says are failures to provide "adequate" health and safety measures for its New York employees.
Additionally, James says the company has taken "retaliatory actions" against multiple employees during the pandemic, including allegations of firing employees who objected to the work conditions..
As a result, James is accusing Amazon of violating New York State Labor Law, specifically, laws dealing with "whistleblowers" and anti-retaliation protections.
In her suit, James is seeking the following damages and reforms:
• Requiring Amazon to take all affirmative steps, including changing policies, conducting training, and undergoing monitoring, among others, to ensure that Amazon reasonably and adequately protects the lives, health, and safety of its employees.
• Awarding backpay, liquidated damages, emotional distress damages, and reinstatement for two former employees.
• Requiring Amazon to give up the profits it made as a result of its illegal acts.
The AG says her office started investigating Amazon last March.
