NY Senate passes bill allowing adoptees to get their birth certificate

NEW YORK (WHEC) -- Lawmakers are making progress on updating an 80-year-old state law that denies a basic right to some American citizens.

The state Senate passed a bill that would allow an adopted person to get a copy of their birth certificate without judicial review.

News10NBC looked into the issue in January after speaking with a Rochester Police recruit who was asked to prove his race by getting his parents' and grandparents' birth certificates. 

Peter Abee was adopted as a child from Bulgaria, and state law seals the birth records of adopted children.
