NEW YORK (WHEC/AP) -- More details are emerging regarding the death of Jeffrey Epstein, the wealthy financier and accused sex trafficker who was found dead in his jail cell one day after a court unsealed new details of the claims against him.

A law enforcement source told the New York Post Monday that the man awaiting trial on federal charges for sexually abusing underage girls was found hanging in his jail cell with a bedsheet wrapped around his neck and secured to the top of a bunk bed.

The Post continues to say that Epstein allegedly kneeled toward the floor and strangled himself with the bedsheet that was used to mimic a noose.

The 66-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell at New York's Metropolitan Correctional Center around 6:30 a.m. Saturday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said.

Shortly after the news broke,  the FBI and the Justice Department began an investigation into the incident.

On Monday, Attorney General William Barr said there were "serious irregularities" at the federal jail where Epstein took his own life.

"I was appalled, and indeed the whole department was, and frankly angry to learn of the MCC's failure to adequately secure this prisoner," Barr said at a police conference in New Orleans. "We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation. The FBI and the office of inspector general are doing just that."
