NYS athletic trainers push for new bill

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Athletic trainers across the Empire state want lawmakers to consider updating the language in law that says what they are allowed to do.

The current law was established in 1992 and athletic trainers say a new bill would better reflect the ever new capabilities of trainers in 2022.

New York is just one of four states that doesn’t even require trainers to get licensed. Most of this proposed bill revolves around that and how it effects schools looking to hire a trainer for their athletics department.

The National Athletic Trainers’ Association says only a third of student-athletes in secondary schools compete with the help of a trainer.
