NYS Comptroller warns of scam targeting retirees

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A scam posing as the state’s retirement fund and the Office of the State Comptroller is targeting retirees.

State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli Friday warned that the scammers send text messages and other communications asking for a payment to “upgrade” the retirement fund in exchange for reduced taxes or money added to their funds.

DiNapoli says it is a scam, and the fund will never send messages asking for payment upgrades.

Anyone who receives one is encouraged not to respond, and to report it to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center or by calling the Albany FBI Field Office at 518-465-7551 or 1-800-CALLFBI.
