New York lawmakers vote for more protection for pets

The New York State Senate voted Monday to extend orders of protections to pets.

The Family Court Act would be changed to include pets, and a court could order a party to either give up a pet or stay away from the animal.

The reason for the change is to extend the protections given to victims of domestic abuse. 
The court could prevent the abuser from any contact with the victim's pet.
