ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — NYSEG and RG&E are warning customers about scammers who are posing as employees of the AVANGRID subsidiaries.

The companies have received reports that callers are claiming to be consultants, and some are using spoofed numbers so that the caller ID corresponds with the company.

Some customers have reported callers are threatening to immediately shut off service unless the customer makes an immediate payment over the phone with a prepaid debit card.

NYSEG and RG&E say they provide advance notice before shutting off service and urge customers to never give out personal or account information to unsolicited callers.

If you're unsure of the identity of the caller, you can report it to your local police department or the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center
