A Brockport man faces charges in connection with a domestic incident in Hamlin on Monday night.

Deputies announced Tuesday that 31-year-old Matthew Denning was arrested and charged with aggravated criminal contempt, burglary, menacing and assault.

Just before 7 p.m. Monday, Denning illegally entered a home where his wife was staying, and violated an order of protection.

After entering the home, deputies said that Denning shoved someone into a wall, and threatened someone else with a pair of scissors.
Deputies said that Denning left, but then came back, broke in and got into a fight with an off-duty deputy who fired one shot.

Investigators said that the bullet didn't hit him, but Denning did cut his head on something else.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office identified the deputy as James Atkins.

Atkins has served as a jail deputy for 11 years. He is on administrative duty pending criminal and internal investigations.
