Officer sent to hospital after accident during car chase

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)- A Rochester Police Department officer was sent to the hospital for evaluation after a car chase on Saturday.

According to the Rochester Police Department, a suspect vehicle was spotted around 2 p.m. on Saturday. A chase ensued as the vehicle tried to elude police on both sides of the city. While the vehcile was eventually recovered, the driver was able to avoid capture.

During the chase, a 2007 Pontiac failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a police car on Norton and Hollenbeck Street. A passenger in the vehicle, 36-year-old city resident James Williams, ran from the vehicle until he was chased down and arrested. He is charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th degree. 

The unidentified driver of the Pontiac was cited for failing to stop, but was not charged criminally.

The officer in the patrol vehicler complained of pain and was sent to a hospital for evaluation, but is expected to be okay.
