FREDONIA, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities in western New York say police responding to a medical emergency at a home shot and killed a person who attacked an officer with a knife.
Police say the shooting happened around 2 p.m. in Fredonia. Chief Brad Meyers says officers responded to a home for a person who with a medical condition who was locked inside a bathroom.
Meyers says the person attacked an officer with a knife while they were inside the home. Police say the officer retreated from the house onto the street before firing. The victim died at the scene.
Police say the officer wasn't hurt during the incident.
According to our Buffalo affiliate WGRZ, a neighbor says he heard four gunshots ring out.
Authorities aren't identifying the officer or the victim. The officer involved in the shooting has been put on administrative leave.
An investigation continues.
