News10NBC is told two people live in the two-story farmhouse. A man living there woke up to smoke got out of the home and called 911. When fire crews arrived, the home was covered in flames and the other person was still inside.

The chief of the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire Department says the weather was a big problem when trying to rescue the person inside and battle flames.

"The challenges we had was a lot of ice, the wind conditions were very strong, and just the shortage of manpower to get here fast because of the weather," Chief Peter Smith said.

"When he got out of the house he went next door to another family member's house to report the fire," Captain Douglas Comanzo said. "He came back and tried to alert the other individual inside the house but the house was too involved at that point. He was unable to have a rescue attempt.

The fire department is working with the Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office to positively identify the person found inside.

Fire officials say they don't think the cause of the fire was suspicious, but the investigation is ongoing.
