PENFIELD, N.Y. (WHEC) — Monroe County Sheriff's deputies announced the arrest of nine people between October and December in connection with a former student's fall through a skylight at the school gym.

The announcement of the charges came on Tuesday afternoon.

William Liang, 18, fell from the roof skylight 28 feet onto the gymnasium floor at Bay Trail Middle School. He is among those charged with criminal trespassing.

Those arrested and charged include:

  • Christopher Barnett, 19
  • Jayden Bulger, 18
  • Chase D'Hont, 19
  • Jacob Emmick, 18
  • Maxwell Hoadley, 19
  • William Laing, 18
  • Miles Lieber, 18
  • Michael Mitchell, 18
  • Jack Schlifke, 18

Captain Andrew DeLyser of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said he hopes the charges will serve as a deterrent.

"We never want anything like this to happen again, and so we're hoping that it doesn't, so if word gets out to the youth of our community that if this is the behavior they engage in, they will be facing an arrest," Captain DeLyser said.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call 911.

The Penfield Central School District released the following statement:

For the past several months, the Penfield Central School District has worked closely with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office on its investigation of the Aug. 15, 2019 incident that occurred at Bay Trail Middle School. The investigation revealed that several individuals were on the roof, in addition to the 2019 graduate who tragically fell through the skylight and the individual who called 911. The District takes the safety and security of its students, staff and facilities seriously, and made the decision to move forward with the prosecution of all of the individuals involved. We appreciate the work of the Sheriff's Office on this investigation.
