ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — News10NBC is celebrating the winners of the spring's “Do the Right Thing” award. Meet three sisters, Alexandra, Brianna, and Catalina Perea.
The sisters go to Paul Road Elementary in the Gates-Chili School District. They received the award for their brave actions after a fire broke out at their home last winter. Brianna noticed there was a smell of something burning and she immediately told her mother, who saw the fire in the wall in a bedroom but was unable to put it out.
The girls' mother could not find a phone, so Alexandra used her phone to call 911 while the entire family safely got out. Gates firefighters were able to put out the fire and save the house. Catalina, the youngest of the three sisters, helped keep the family dog warm as they waited safely in the car.
The “Do the Right Thing” awards, organized by the Rochester Police Department since 1995, recognizes students for their courage, kindness, heroism, leadership, or other attributes.
Any student enrolled in grades K-12 in any Monroe County school is eligible for nomination. The good deed the student is nominated for must have occurred in Monroe County within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form (this includes family, friends, school staff, coaches, etc.).
