There are growing concerns over a landfill and its smell in Perinton.

Nearly 2,000 people are members of a Facebook group called Fresh Air for the Eastside. The members are fed up with the smell coming from the High Acres landfill east of Fairport.

The odor is so bad Brett Provenzano, the superintendent of the Fairport Central School District, issued a statement saying, "The stench is compromising the learning environment at schools close to the site."

People in neighborhoods surrounding the landfill are constantly posting their concerns in the Facebook group, getting the attention of public officials.

Sen. Rich Funke and the Department of Environmental Conservation are now monitoring the situation.

Waste Management has released a statement in the past acknowledging increasing odors, but said the company is working on it.

Officials from Waste Management will go before the Perinton Conservation Board at 7:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Conference Room Tuesday. The meeting is open to the public.
