LIVONIA, MICH. (WHEC)- Pet Supplies Plus is recalling bulk pig ear products after the Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced they were investigating contaminated treats contaminated with Salmonella.
According to the press release on the FDA website, Pet Supplies Plus is recalling bulk pig ear product supplied to all of its locations by several different vendors due to the potential for contamination. Salmonella can not only affect animals that eat the product, but also pose a risk to humans who handle, especially if they have not washed their hands.
Humans infected with Salmonella may suffer from several symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and cramping. It can also result in more serious ailments. Anyone showing these signs after having contact with the products are urged to contact their doctor.
Pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Other pets may only display decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Anyone who notices their pet has consumed the recalled pig ears and is showing these symptoms is urged to contact their veterinarian.
Bulk pig ears were distributed to Pet Supplies Plus stores in many states, including New York. Bulk pig ears were stocked in open bins. Prepackaged branded pig ears are not included in this voluntary recall. Although 45 people in 13 states have been diagnosed with Salmonella-related illness, none have been confirmed to be a result of pig ears from Pet Supplies Plus.
Anyone who has purchased the bulk pig ears are asked to discontinue the use of them and discard them. Anyone with further questions should call Pet Supplies Plus at 734-793-6564.
