Police identify East Avenue bank robbery suspect

The suspect in a Rochester bank robbery has been identified by Police. 

Police say that 46-year-old Robert Williams of Rochester entered the M&T Bank on East Avenue at approximately 11:30 a.m. on Saturday and threatened to shoot the teller if she did not comply with his demands.

Williams received an undisclosed amount of cash then proceeded to flee in a Blue Nissan Murano SUV.

He encountered police on Melville Street and attempted to hit them with his vehicle. One police officer shot at Williams hitting the car. 

Williams managed to escape by driving his vehicle across front lawns of homes, finally crashing into a vehicle parked on Laurelton Road. Police then pursued and arrested him on foot. 

Williams was transported to Strong Hospital with minor injuries. An officer was taken to Highland Hospital for evaluation and has since been released.

The stolen money was returned to the bank following the arrest.

Williams is charged with robbery in the third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, reckless endangerment in the first degree and aggravated unlicensed operator in the first degree for driving on a revoked license with 23 suspensions.

The 46-year-old has seven prior felony convictions. He is set to be arraigned on Monday in Rochester City Court.
