State Police are investigating an online predator apparently targeting and blackmailing students in Yates County.
Penn Yan Superintendent Howard Dennis told our news partner, The Chronicle Express, that the investigation began a few days ago and several students have already fallen victim. Both Penn Yan and Dundee school districts have sent out warnings to students and parents.
Students in Penn Yan confided in trusted adults at the school.
The predator friends students on social media and convinces them to send personal images and information. The predator then tells them all of it will be released publicly if the student doesn't send more pictures.
The Chronicle Express reports as many as 15 students in Penn Yan have already been targeted. The Dundee superintendent has not yet heard of any reports in that district. Both school leaders are urging all students to set their social media accounts to private. They also want parents to talk to their kids to see if they have become victims of this.
State Police are working to find out who is behind these threats.
