Trump: 'I never directed' ex-lawyer to break the law

December 13, 2018 09:55 AM

(NBC News) - President Trump says he never instructed his former attorney to break the law.

The president's comments, made on Twitter Thursday morning, were his first in response to attorney Michael Cohen's three-year prison sentence, handed down Wednesday after Cohen pleaded guilty to several felonies, including two campaign-finance violations involving hush payments to a pair of women just prior to the 2016 election to keep them silent about their allegations of affairs with Trump.

Cohen testified that he made the payments at the direction of Mr. Trump.

"I never directed Michael Cohen to break the law. He was a lawyer and he is supposed to know the law," President Trump tweeted, adding "I did nothing wrong!"
