Proposed ban on plastic straws hits snag in Canandaigua

October 22, 2018 07:24 AM

The push for a new law banning plastic straws in Canandaigua has hit a roadblock.

The City Council’s ordinance committee has been looking into a scaled back version of a similar straw ban in Seattle.

Supporters want to cut back on the amount of waste going into the Ontario County Landfill, which is scheduled to shut down in 10 years.

According to News10NBC's news partners at the Messenger Post, some members claim the law is unnecessary. They say many city restaurants are already moving to paper straws or eliminating plastic straws altogether.

The disability rights community also criticized the plan, although places providing medical care would be exempt.
