Proposed Space Force has mission of protecting U.S. interests

Department of Defense officials say that the proposed Space Force is a means to protect U.S. interests and advantages in space.

In a roundtable discussion with reporters last Thursday, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shanahan remarked that space is now a combat domain and that China and Russia have the means to destroy, hack or jam satellites.

The National Defense Strategy calls for DoD to establish a U.S. Space Command under the direction of a four-star officer. 

Establishing the U.S. Space Force will require congressional approval.
