War of words between Rochester mayor and former opponent

The war of words between Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren and former opponent Rachel Barnhart continues. Barnhart fired back at Mayor Warren for what she calls a “disturbing” Facebook post.

It all started with an announcement that the city is updating its freedom of information process. That typically would not make many headlines but the mayor caught everyone's attention with a message posted online. She said now that the public can see FOIL reports, they are going to see a lot filed in recent months by Barnhart. She lost to Warren in September’s mayoral race.

The mayor said Barnhart has flooded the city with frivolous requests.  She estimates between one and 200 have been filed in 10 weeks.

Warren claims Barnhart also harassed local churches and businesses to ask them about their relationship with the mayor. Warren added Barnhart will not let the election go and she is troubled by Barnhart's behavior.

After speaking with her lawyer, Barnhart responded saying the mayor lied in her post.

Barnhart said she just wanted the deputy mayor's travel records, the city's checking history, and stressed she has not harassed any businesses or even met with churches.

It is worth noting Barnhart, or any citizen, can file as many open records requests as they want.

Barnhart claims the mayor is hiding something. She also said maybe it is Warren who has not gotten over the election.

Barnhart responded to this story via Twitter Friday morning.
