REAL ID causing real problems for DMV branches

January 03, 2019 09:49 PM

Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello says you are likely experiencing longer wait times at Department of Motor Vehicle branches around the county because of the federally approved REAL ID Act .

Some people want to get a jump on the new requirement. Starting Oct. 1, 2020, only the Enhanced or REAL ID will be accepted to get on a domestic flight, enter certain federal buildings or military bases, unless you have a passport.

The REAL ID won't cost you any more money, however, according to the DMV, an Enhanced license will cost an additional $30 and will also allow you to cross a U.S. border coming from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.

"It's almost like starting over again," says Bello. "You have to bring in your birth certificate, your social security card and all those documents have to be scanned by the clerks at the DMV and processed."

He is asking the state to allow county DMV's to keep a larger portion of the money the state makes at the local offices so clerks can hire more staff to handle the increased number of customers.

Here's what DMV customers had to say Thursday afternoon.

"...I love to travel, so whatever I have to do to travel, I'm going to do it. But for those who stay in Rochester, stay in their little towns, it's unfair," says Veronica Birmingham of Rochester.

But Chistina McVoi sees it differently. McVoi says, "I think it's more for our safety than anything else."

If you plan to travel, the DMV recommends you upgrade before 2020.
