ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — With less than a three-day supply of most blood types available, the American Red Cross is facing a blood shortage.
The Red Cross has issued an emergency need for blood and platelet donors to replenish the blood supply. Elibigle individuals of all blood types are encouraged to donate to help prevent delays in medical care.
The call for donations comes after about 450 fewer community blood drives were organized last week compared to a typical week due to the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
Officials say this led to about 17,000 fewer donations than needed for patients in a single week, causing the Red Cross to have less than a three-day supply of most blood types, and less than a two-day supply of type O blood. At least a five-day supply of all blood products is desired.
Donors of all blood types, especially type O, are urged to make an appointment to at a local blood donation center or community blood drive. You can signup at RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
