ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Toby Gardenhire has been named the new manager of the Rochester Red Wings.
The team made the announcement on its website Friday morning.
Gardenhire, 37, is the son of current Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire. He will enter his third season as a manager at Frontier Field for the 2020 season.
Gardenhire was a Red Wings player in 2010 and 2011 and returned to Rochester as part of the coaching staff at the beginning of 2017.
Gardenhire has been around the game for his entire life. His father, Ron Gardenhire used to be the manager of The Twins, and Toby says that shaped him as a manager.
"I got to be around all of those guys, my dad was a big influence on me, I always wanted to be a baseball coach or player, I wanted to be a player first until I realized I wasn't good enough to be a player," Gardenhire said. "But I always wanted to be around it and be part of the game, I was a lucky kid, and I'm lucky to be able to get the chance to do what I always wanted to do."
His staff will include pitching coach Cibney Bello, hitting coach Matt Borgschulte, bullpen coach Mike McCarthy, coach Robbie Robinson, athletic trainer Jason Kirkman, and strength and conditioning coach Jacob Dean.
McCarthy and Dean are the only two members of the coaching staff returning from the 2019 staff.
