Region largely avoids worst of ice storm even as power outages and closings reported

A ice storm that went through the region late Saturday and Sunday was not as bad as some feared, but still caused scattered outages and closures across the area.

As of 11:39 a.m., RGE reported that 2,295 were without power in Monroe and Wayne Counties, primarily in Penfield, where 1,784 were in the dark. An hour later, however, the number had fallen to 274.

National Grid reported that just a handful are without power in the area, although earlier in the day there were outages in Kendall and Brockport, including at SUNY Brockport.

Some of the worst weather came on Edgemere Drive in Greece, where News10NBC's Samantha LaRocca observed glazed-over grass, frozen trees, waves, and high winds. One of her reports from a special Sunday news broadcast can be seen in the video above.

In addition, over 20 schools, churches or businesses closed or delayed their operations on Sunday due to the weather, including an outright cancellation of the Rochester River Run. Several flights in and out of the Greater Rochester International Airport were also canceled or delayed

Although News10NBC's meteorologists say the worst of the storm is likely over, an Ice Storm Warning remains in effect in every local county except for Yates until 2 p.m.
