Republican Assembly Judiciary Committee members want Cuomo impeachment investigation to continue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC)— Republican members of New York’s Assembly Judiciary Committee Wednesday said they’d like to complete the impeachment investigation into Gov.Andrew Cuomo, despite his resignation.

Members, including Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes (R, C-Caledonia), released a joint statement saying the people of New York deserve a "full public disclosure" of information obtained in the committee’s investigation so far.

"We intend to hold Gov. Andrew Cuomo accountable on behalf of his victims, including the 15,000 innocent lives lost in nursing homes. This has been a thorough, significant endeavor and we will strive to bring closure to all of the grieving families," the joint statement said.

The committee just met for the first time Monday It had been investigating since March but with the release of the Attorney General’s report last week, which concluded the governor sexually harassed 11 women, members kicked up in the investigation.

The investigation involves COVID deaths in nursing homes, the governor’s book deal, and whether or not state employees were used on government time to write the book, it also looks at the Mario Cuomo Bridge and the construction of it.

If Cuomo was convicted on impeachment charges, it’d prevent him from ever taking public office in New York again.

Sen. Maj. Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, who’s next in line to succeed Kathy Hochul as lieutenant governor, said the decision to continue the investigation is up to assemblymembers considering the case.

Democratic Assemblyman Harry Bronson told News10NBC he believes the process may not move forward, he said continuing the investigation could be a distraction.

As of now, the committee is expected to take up its impeachment inquiry next week.
