ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Seneca Park Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its three North American river otters.

Zoo officials announced Monday that Heather had died at the age of 16. The average life expectancy for an otter is 12 years.

Heather was being treated for dental disease and degenerative joint disease, according to zoo officials.

The other two otters—12-year-old Sailor and 16-year-old Sara—are also being monitored for similar age-related conditions, but appear to be in good health.

Both will continue to be on display for the Zoo's guests.
