ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - A shooting that happened at the Rochester apartment building Cedarwood Towers by an armed security guard is moving to a grand jury.

The Monroe County District Attorney's Office tells News10NBC that the case will be brought to a grand jury to help determine if the shooting was in self defense or a charge to move forward on.

Police tell News10NBC the guard was on duty and called for the help.

A spokesperson for the Rochester Police Department tells us the incident started inside, in the lobby of this building. The security guard on duty was apparently addressing a tenant who was threatening others in the lobby.

The security guard legally shot his registered firearm one time at Thomas, striking him in the upper body.

Thomas was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where he later died.

The investigation is ongoing.
