People missing loved ones this holiday season are shining a light in honor of the lives lost.

Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on Lake Avenue is glowing after thousands of luminaries were lit Saturday night at the annual Luminaries of Remembrance Ceremony.

Families who have lost loved ones in the past year were invited out to participate.

Organizers say this event is dedicated to the 250,000 people buried at the cemetery.

"What it does is, it brings light into what could be at sometimes a dark time for people as they're thinking about their loved ones and approaching the holiday season. And light brings light and will hopefully help people open their hearts and help remember their loved ones bring about a more peaceful holiday season," said Chief Executive Officer of Holy Sepulche Cemetery, Lynn Sullivan.

Families enjoyed a blessing from Rochester's Catholic Bishop Salvatore Matano and a holiday choral concert that included cookies and hot chocolate.

In total 3,500 luminaries were lit.
